Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone >>
By JK Rowling
Ages 7 and up.

After years of my niece telling me I just HAD to read Harry Potter, I finally got it from the library. I was lucky enough to get the edition with Jim Kay’s illustrations, which are terrific.

I have to admit; I wasn’t looking forward to this read. I’m not much into magical/fantasy fiction. I enjoyed the first Harry Potter movie, but reading this big book was more of a commitment than popcorn and a couple hours in a theater.

Surprise–I really liked it! Very well written, engaging and creative. I can completely see how this book captured the imaginations of so many children and adults alike.

It’s nowhere near a fleshed-out universe like the Tolkien books, but it doesn’t have to be. It’s perfect for what it is- a coming-of-age adventure story. I also liked that it wasn’t “Americanized;” there were lots of Briticisms that added to the atmosphere.

Excellent choice for children 10-14 to read themselves, but perfectly fine for a read-aloud to younger children, ages 7 and up. There are a few scary moments that might be a bit much for the younger listeners. Some children may find upsetting the hooded figure drinking the blood of a dead unicorn…but that’s the scariest it gets. Most of the book is just fun magic and adventure.

I can’t believe I’m writing this–but now I want to read the next in series!
