Labor and Birth Mini-Series

Class Overview

This class covers the essential information about labor and birth, and includes a brief overview of newborn care and feeding.

It is recommended for experienced parents who did not take classes with their first baby, or for first-time parents with busy schedules or limited time available before baby’s estimated due date.

Class Topics

  • Choices in pregnancy and Childbirth
  • Stages of labor
  • Signs that labor is starting and Coping with early labor
  • Knowing when it’s time to go to the birthplace, or call midwife to attend a home birth
  • Techniques for coping with labor pain: breathing, relaxation, labor support, pain medication
  • Knowing when it’s time to start pushing. Birth.
  • Typical hospital routines and procedures
  • Variations in labor and possible interventions, including Cesarean birth
  • Introduction to breastfeeding and basic newborn care

Logistics

Formats:
Offered in either a 2-day format with a 4-hour session each day, or 1-day format of an 8.5-hour session (1-day sessions include a 45-minute lunch break).

Time:
Typical class times are on weekends either 9am-1pm, or occasionally afternoons, 1pm-5pm, for the 2-day format, 9am-5:30pm for one-day format.

This class is offered at several locations >>. All classes are open to anyone, regardless of where they are giving birth. Class fee covers pregnant parents and one support person, and includes a copy of our book Pregnancy, Childbirth, and the Newborn >>
